Once upon a time, there was a nine-taled fox with golden hair and white face, which had been doing evil in China and India.

It embarked for Japan and disguised itself as a beautiful lady Tamamo no Mae. Being fascinated by her charms the Emperor Toba received and favored her as a concubine.

Meanwhile the Emperor became ill and an Onmyoji (master of Ying Yang) Abe no Seimei Yasuchika penetrated the disguise and ascertained the fox caused the ill of the Emperor.

The bad fox flew away to Nasuno ga hara (Tochigi prefecture today) and disguised as Tamamo no Mae again. Then it deluded a Buddhist priest Chinsai and ate him at Junenji Temple.

To stop its evil deeds two masters of Japanese archery Miura-no-suke and Kazusa-no-suke were dispatched and defeated the fox.
