The oldest mention of KAGURA in manuscript was in Manyo-shu, 8th century anthology of Japanese poetry.

Since then, KAGURA has been handed down from generation to generation.

Before 1860 ’s only Shinto priests are allowed to perform KAGURA, but today the doors are widely opened and anybody can appear on the KAGURA stage.  In recent years it seems to be performed rather as entertainment than Shinto ritual. KAGURA is performed not only in shrines but also in halls. It is a popular entertainment of inauguration ceremonies and wedding parties.

After the World War , observing fundamental manners, KAGURA has been changing or evolving to be more attractive and popular. The tempo of Hayashi, the musical accompaniment has been becoming quicker and stories becoming more exciting and thrilling.
